Chikankari is hand embroidery from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. It began as white stitches on fine white muslin, and it is still worked mostly on light cloth. Flowers and leaves are built from tiny stitches, small knots and net-like holes. Some stitches are sewn from the back, so the flower shows through as a soft shadow. Karigars in Lucknow and women artisans in Hardoi stitch these pieces.
